Because the communities that we are a part of deserve nothing less.
2020 was a challenging year, to say the least, but it was more important than ever to stand in solidarity and contribute to our communities' health and well-being. Continuing our tradition to give back to our communities during the holiday season, this year we went digital with our efforts to rally our teams globally and raise money to support cancer research and immunotherapy.
Before we get down to what and how, let’s talk a little about the why and how.
In 2018, WHO estimated that 9.6 million people around the world died because of cancer. While our knowledge base around cancer types continues to expand, modern medicine is yet to find a cure that is both effective and accessible to everyone. With that in mind, we committed to supporting both the Canadian Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK through a fundraiser – at the end of the day, every dollar counts. 2020 holiday fundraiser was the first of its kind for us. We wanted to bring our employees together (especially during the times we're apart) to collectively make a positive impact on an important cause.
And now for the what and how...
It began on Nov 16, 2020, when we kicked off our Holiday Fundraiser followed by a Virtual Scavenger Hunt on Nov 20, 2020.
Our teams gathered via zoom along with their friends and families.
They were asked to find 20 items at home within a 60 second time limit. Speed and resourcefulness brought victory! Several Appnovators tied for first place, which led to a bonus round and a lightning round – where they were asked to find the biggest book in their home. Whoever had the book with the highest page count won.
Shout out to the winners; Amina Aden (London based Senior Consultant, Experience Design), Sean Nemati (Vancouver based IT Manager), and Mélodie Pham (Vancouver based Junior Accountant)!
A Silent Auction followed the Virtual Scavenger Hunt.
Ten days later, Nov 30, 2020, we launched the silent auction that raised $3,421 CAD from 14 items donated by:
- Stella Habib
- LashesxDaisy
- Prairie Naturals
- Hub Financial (Bo Lebherz)
- Capri CMW (Amar Munjal)
- Natalie Matias
- James Ngo
- Appnovation Operations Department
- Appnovation Marketing Department
- Fallen Monk Tattoo
Our goal was to raise £1,500 for Cancer Research UK and $5,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. At the end of 31 days, we closed the fundraiser, exceeding our initial goals, having raised £2,069 for the Cancer Research UK and $9,197 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Every little bit counts, and this is just the beginning.
