The way an organization is configured and operating today is the known as the Current Operating Model (COM) whereas the what the organization should be move to in terms of the way it should be configured and operating, ie. the future state, to achieve its strategy is considered the Target Operating Model (TOM).
Hence the main objective of the Target Operating Model is to assist in providing a blueprint for the application of a corporate strategy to a business operation.
At a very high level, the TOM serves as a reference to show the perceived “ideal state” as to how best the business can be organized to achieve maximum efficiency and performance and therefore be in the best possible position to execute the entity’s vision, strategy and objectives.
