Appnovator Spotlight: Laken Lam

Meet Laken Lam, UX/UI Coordinator, Experience. 

Laken Lam, joined Appnovation two years ago as a co-op student and is now a full-time employee on the Experience team as a  UX/UI Coordinator. She started in the Toronto office and last June, headed to Hong Kong to join the team there. She has since won an Appno Star for Ambition, of which she showcases through her work and positive attitude.

Laken was kind enough to take some time out of her busy schedule to chat with us about her experiences with Appnovation as well as getting to know a little bit about what she enjoys on her time off.

Tell us about your role?
As a UX/UI Coordinator on the Experience team, I love turning complex challenges into engaging digital experiences. I work closely with the Strategy and Development teams to deliver solutions that bridge the gap between client goals and user needs.

What made you decide to move to Hong Kong?
I was seeking an opportunity to challenge myself both personally and professionally, and what better place to do it than in a lively city like Hong Kong? As a Chinese-Canadian, it was easy for me to say yes to this next adventure, not only to experience its vibrant culture but to explore my own roots. Working with our clients in APAC has provided me learning opportunities to grow in my career, as well as valuable insights into cross-cultural dynamics.

What has been the most challenging part of moving to a new country and what is your favourite part?
The biggest hurdle I faced moving to Hong Kong was adjusting to a new environment and work culture while navigating a language barrier. But the challenges were far outweighed by the incredible experiences. From exploring hidden gems in the city to enjoying stunning island views, every day feels like a new adventure. I have also met many expats from all over the world who share a similar zest for life – they have helped make Hong Kong feel like home.

What does a typical day look like for you?
I spend (almost) all day, everyday using Figma! I’m lucky to have a role where I get to exercise creativity in everything I do – from brainstorming digital solutions to transforming ideas into  engaging prototypes.

In your time off, what’s your favourite hobby? 
Moving to Hong Kong has given me a new breath of life to do things I’ve always wanted to try. Lately, I’ve been keeping myself busy with different hobbies such as pilates, aerial yoga, hiking and pottery!

What do you do to relax?
To escape the city hustle, I hop on a ferry to one of Hong Kong’s many islands to relax on the beach, explore the local shops and enjoy authentic eats!

Favourite food?
Thai food! Tom Yum Goong and Pad See Ew are my go-to’s.
